Plan a portable handwashing station

When a tap is unavailable, the useful first project is a stable layout with clean supplies and a separate place for waste. This planning sheet helps you organize that layout; current public-health advice determines which water is suitable.

1. Plan access and stability

Sketch the jug, catch basin and supplies on paper before setting them out. Check the jug instructions and surface capacity. Position the station so a person can reach the tap without lifting a filled jug or balancing it on improvised supports. Keep the area out of a walking route.

Leave a clearly separate place for wastewater. A basin that is full or difficult to move makes the station hard to use; decide who will check it and where local rules permit disposal.

2. Label the intended use

Mark the clean-water container and wastewater basin distinctly. Do not treat hygiene water as drinking water because both are clear. CDC’s emergency-hygiene guidance is the health reference for handwashing and suitable alternatives; follow local advisories where water quality is uncertain.

Give soap and drying supplies a clean, reachable location. The diagram is an arrangement example, not a cleanliness test. A check mark does not establish that the water is safe or that the station prevents infection.

3. Rehearse the layout

Try reaching and operating the tap with the intended users before depending on the station. Record a layout change if a child, seated person or someone with limited grip cannot use it comfortably. Keep a support person available when needed.

Inspect leaks, stability, remaining supplies and waste capacity at a chosen interval. Save the sheet near the kit; keep the current health instructions separately available rather than improvising treatment from an assembly drawing.
