1. Count consistent units
A fictional example has 12 labelled servings at 250 calories per serving. Multiplying gives 3,000 labelled calories. If a package lists calories per 100 grams, do not treat that as calories per whole package. Keep quantity, unit and calorie basis in the same row.
Missing or approximate label data should remain visibly uncertain. Include preparation needs, allergies and refrigeration after opening in a separate suitability column; a calorie figure does not answer those questions.
2. Make the denominator explicit
For an arithmetic demonstration only, an assumed household total of 3,000 calories per day would make that sample stock equivalent to one assumed day. Changing the assumption to 1,500 makes the same stock two assumed days; it does not make 1,500 appropriate for anyone.
Prepper’s ration model totals servings × label calories and divides by the entered number of people and daily-calorie assumption. Default values are editable software assumptions, not medical recommendations. Age, activity, illness, pregnancy and other needs cannot be reduced to this generic division.
3. Rotate separately from calculation
Record the actual package dates and a review date, place use-first stock where it can be found and update quantities after use. Health Canada’s emergency-food guidance should determine food-safety decisions; the calculator does not inspect food.
Do not use a high coverage percentage as a nutritional adequacy score. Add a visible unresolved note for missing dietary or preparation information and seek suitable professional advice for individual nutritional needs.
